Turning Desperation into Dignity. Giving Girls and Young Mothers a Second Chance.

In the heart of Kenya’s poorest slums, countless girls are forced to leave school not because they lack ambition, but because poverty leaves them no choice. With no education, no job, and no support system, they face a harsh reality. Many fall into early pregnancies, prostitution, or crime, not out of desire, but out of desperation. These girls are not broken they are simply trapped. What they need is a chance. A skill. A hand to hold. That’s what Gift Her Hands offers: a way out, a way up, and a way forward.

We offer a safe space where girls and young mothers can learn real, practical skills that help them earn a living and rebuild their lives. Our program runs for six months and is completely free. We train them in:

Courses Trained

Graphic Design

The six month Fashion and Design course provides learners with practical, hands on skills in garment construction, sewing, pattern drafting, fabric selection, fashion illustration, and basic business management, blending creativity with technical training to build confidence and innovation. Through both classroom learning and workshop practice, students gain the ability to transform design ideas into finished garments while developing problem-solving skills and artistic expression. The course equips learners for income generation and entrepreneurship by preparing them to work independently or start their own tailoring or fashion-related businesses. Graduates can pursue diverse career paths such as fashion designer, tailor, dressmaker, pattern maker, fashion illustrator, boutique assistant, alterations specialist, accessories designer, costume designer, or small business owner enabling them to secure employment or create opportunities within their communities.

Beauty therapy is taking care of people’s appearance using cosmetic products. The services are;facials, manicure, pedicure, eyebrows shaping, waxing, makeup, body arts etc

In this course,we teach both theory and practicals that helps learners to understand the skin treatments and being familiar with the product knowledge. It also helps learners to be able to give the best service as well as having the persuading skills that helps them keep clients and build their self-esteem and business.

It empowers the young mothers and girls in the slum to be able to gain income to sustain their loved ones and afford a comfortable lifestyle for themselves, gain self respect and discpline. It helps them to learn work ethics and personnal grooming.

Teaching beauty therapy to the girls really helps to avoid a give me syndrome and make them feel confident with their skills and sell them not only in kibra but across the world as it goes ‘beauty builds confidence ‘so through employment they earn and some will be the employer .

The hairdressing course introduces girls to a world of creativity, confidence, and opportunity. It empowers them with valuable skills in hair care and styling while teaching discipline, professionalism, and self-expression. Most importantly, it inspires them to believe in their abilities and build a future where they can earn, grow, and shine. The end goal is to equip every girl with the skills and confidence to create her own pathway to success.

Additional Skills Trained

Communication Skills

Communication skills is a subject taught to empower young women to express themselves with clarity. As much as the lesson equips the girls with the power to use their voice, they also gain the ability to express themselves in writing as they prepare themselves for entrepreneurial or the job market.

Emphasis is specifically made to areas where they will encounter first Hand experience since this stage of their life (after high school) often involves building personal identity and goals.

Learning how to deliver effective speeches, perform confidently in interviews, and write clear reports and professional CVs helps them stand out academically and competitively in their careers. Understanding non-verbal communication such as posture, eye contact, and facial expressions also strengthens their ability to build meaningful connections and present themselves with confidence.

The end goal through this skill, is to empower the girl to advocate for herself, seize opportunities, and participate boldly in any environment she enters.

Marketing is the comprehensive process of creating, communicating, and delivering value to customers and society through activities that promote and facilitate the buying & selling of products/services.
Marketing is important as it will help drives sales and revenue by connecting their businesses with the right target audience(customers), creating brand awareness, and building customer relationships. It’s an important tool for our girls as they are learning hands-on-skills.

We don’t just teach skills. We build confidence. We offer mentorship. We help them believe in themselves again. Every girl who joins Gift Her Hands program walks in with fear but walks out with purpose and strong mindset with them.

I’m Sharon Omwanda. Over the past six months,my journey in the Hairdressing course has been nothing short of transformative. When l first enrolled, l was excited but uncertain about my skills.Today l can confidently say that this training has shaped me both professionally and personally.

The course has equiped me with essential technical sk8lls_from cutting, styling, coloring and braiding to understanding product use and hair care techniques. Each practical session helped me grow more confident in my abilities and l now feel capable of providing professional-quality service.

Beyond the technical skills, the training has taught me patience, creativity, discipline and how to relate with clients in a professional manner.l have learned the importance of hygiene, customer service, time management and teamwork. Those soft skills improved my self-esteem and helped me communicate better with others.

Most importantly, this course has opened my eyes to new opportunities. I now see Hairdressing not just as a skill, but a career path that can provide financial independence and a chance to express my creativity every day.
